Street-vendors constitute a huge working population of the country, despite this, they face a lot of daily problems which threaten their livelihood as they are harassed by city-officials and policemen and always have to resolve to paying high bribes, running away or even having their goods confiscated. Also city-planners, municipal authorities and officials consider them as a menace that adds very little to the beauty, cause traffic by blocking roads. This is a result of globalization and economic development.
I want this profession to sustain, as it is the best mode of income for many individuals who belong to the low-income groups or live under the poverty line in India. Many of the street-vendors are migrants from rural villages who come into urban cities to earn money through mostly vending goods and thereafter this money is sent back to fund the daily lives of their families.
Street- vending is their life, their only mode of income, literary their ‘Life on Wheels,’ and this is one of the major reasons why it should be protected.
As my aim is to bring forth the research and facts about the situation regarding the street vending and to also spread awareness about this problem, the best way to achieve this is through the making of an archive.
I want this concept to be delivered through a display of actual facts and research in the form of an archive.
An archive constitutes a collection of records or documents providing information and details of a certain place, event or a group of people. Michel Foucault stated that an archive is neither just a collection of texts that define a culture, nor even a set of institutions that preserve texts. The archive is the law that can be said.
